Port isn’t just for your grandma anymore. Icewind dale best racial enemy. That means it’s time to learn a little more about it, and the first thing to know is how long a bottle of port will stay open, because we all know you. I've opened a few port in the router's interface and it worked for more than a year. Lately I noticed that the ports I opened are now closed and I can't figure out why. When I check them with Advanced Port Scanner program, and I use the laptop's local ip they show as open. After contacting game helpdesks I was told certain ports need to be open in order to ensure a smooth connection. So I set up a static IP and port forwarded from my router. However even after forwarding, some ports are still being shown as 'CLOSED' when testing. For example Call of Duty Black Ops requires 3074 TCP/UDP port open to play smoothly. Select the “Specific Local Ports” option and then type the port number into the field provided. If you’re opening more than one port, you can separate them by commas. If you need to open a range of ports, use a hyphen (-). Click “Next” when you’re done. On the next page, click “Allow the Connection” and then click “Next.”.

If your firewall(s) is blocking the connections, than you should find references in your firewall logs. No connection should be blocked, without creating a log line.

So I think, it would be best, to inspect the logs of your firewalls to find the one that is blocking the connections.

You could also do some packet capturing behind the first firewall, to see, if the connection requests came trough the first one and than focus on the second firewall, if they did - or research the config of the first firewall, if they did not.

Still

On WatchGuard firewalls, we have a tool called 'real time traffic monitor', that gives us information about all logged connections in real time. Since denied ones are logged by default, we can see the connection being blocked, together with the reason why the firewall has blocked it. Makes it easy to troubleshoot such cases. I don't know if you have something like that on PAN or ASA (afraid not?).

Due

Check for open ports and verify port forwarding setup on your router.

What is Port Checker ?

Opened Port But Still Closed

Port Checker is a simple and free online tool for checking open ports on your computer/device, often useful in testing port forwarding settings on a router. Crack the whip sound effect free. For instance, if you're facing connection issues with a program (email, IM client etc) then it may be possible that the port required by the application is getting blocked by your router's firewall or your ISP. In such cases, this tool might help you in diagnosing any problem with firewall setup. You could also find this useful for security purpose, in case you're not sure whether a particular port is open or closed. If you host and play games like Minecraft, use this checker to make sure the server port(25565) is configured properly for port forwarding, then only your friends will be able to connect to your server.

Why Are All Ports Closed

Port numbers ranges from 1 to 65535, out of which well known ports are pre-defined as convention by IANA.

If you're looking for a full list of port numbers check out this wikipedia page. I've listed all the common ports above, feel free to enter any custom port number to check. By default, this site is taking your device's IP address as target ip address (the device through which you're visiting this web page), but you can change the IP input field to check for other IP addresses - remote clients and servers as well. But, please don't misuse this option otherwise, I would have to restrict the IP address to source again (as I had done earlier). Please keep in mind that if you're using a VPN or proxy server then it may not be able to get your device's IP correctly.

Understanding Port Forwarding

Port forwarding or port mapping involves translating the address (or port number to a new destination), accepting the packets and forwarding it (using routing table). It's typically used in connecting remote computers to specific programs running on computer (in a private LAN (Local Area Network)). For example : running a public server (HTTP, port 80) on a computer in a private LAN or granting SSH access to a specific computer in a private LAN etc. Read More on Wikipedia.
