    It gets the job done, but after the job is done your internal speakers will no longer work nor will your internal microphone. You must change your settings back to normal. It took me a long time to figure this out. A real pain in the butt application, but it works.

    This was good in its day (like around 2014), but hasn't worked properly for years in newer versions of macOS. The modern and much more capable replacement is Loopback. (Some other software can do some of the same things, including Boom2, Movavi Sound Grabber, and various other utilities for grabbing streaming audio and video, but most of them really are intended just for that, e.g. recording Spotify streams.) I prefer Loopback, because it's a configurable virtual sound device, and can even be set up on an app-by-app basis (e.g., you can set it to record some long TED talk or whatever on YouTube in Chrome without echoing the audio to your physical output device, then go watch a movie in VLC without the audio from that interfering with your TED recording). Because the OS sees it as a device, it can be set in one for other purposes, such as screen-recording software like Voila. You can thus use such a combo to rip any online video even if you can't find a downloading app or browser extension that supports the site in question. (The only downside is you have to let the whole thing play from start to finish while you grab it. So, go make dinner or something.)I'll give this three stars, since it's still usable on old versions of Mac OS X. However, various newer, better programs are also.

    A very light, indispensable tool for opening up a stock Mac's audio capabilities. Combined with AU Lab, I was able to easily equalize my Klipsch 2.1 desktop speakers that came out of the box so boomy as to be unusable. Now, they sound amazing.. all with 2 free, light pieces of software that take a little work setting up and then.. it's all good. I just have an AU Lab saved settings icon on my desktop that I click after a reboot and I have fantastic sound.

    You don't need soundflower to record audio on screen recordings on quicktime. I can just select internal microphone, but didn't see that was an option till after I downloaded Soundflower. Now I have it installed but can't uninstall it.

    Well, it doesn't work. I read the uninstall instructions and don't understand any of it. Programs like Clean My Mack won't find it so it cannot be uninstalled this way.
    Definitely not for 'normal' users.
    Do not recommend for users who are not programmers.

    I've only used it a handful of times, but once I figured out how it works (not that difficult; you just have to pay attention to the instructions, know what I mean?). After setting it up, I was rather pleased with its performance, and it does exactly what it's supposed to do: route audio from various applications to your computer, with no apparent loss of quality.

    Fixed sound volume control problem with HDMI audio.
    Works ok with me on my Mac mini (mid 2011). Can now use volume control with sound via HDMI to display speakers, which is not normally possible, as HDMI audio output is fixed level. Welcome to our Soundflower installation guide. Installing Soundflower on modern macOS versions can be a little complicated as kernel extensions need now to be given permissions before being loaded for the first time. So the Soundflower installer will error out on macOS High Sierra and Mojave. But this is easy to fix.

Opening words for worship service

  1. Download the installer: soundflower_2.0b2.zip.
  2. Run it and perform the install
  3. The installer will tell you that it failed. This is completely normal.
  4. Open the System Preferences and go to the “Security & Privacy” settings.
  5. Click on the “Allow” button next to “MATT INGALS”.(This has to be a physical hardware click. Remote desktop connections or even local software tools like “Better Touch Tool” won’t work!)
  6. Run the installer again. This time it will run through without any problems.

IMPORTANT: If you can’t record from Soundflower under Mojave (the device is there but only silence is being recorded) make sure that you have given microphone access permissions to your recording app! macOS treats Soundflower like a microphone in this regard. Go to system preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Privacy -> Microphone -> [check mark next to your recording app]

macOS 10.10 - 10.12 Soundflower Install

Because we’re getting this asked a lot: Here’s how you get Soundflower to work with macOS 10.12 Sierra and OS X 10.10 and 10.11…

As you know, since 10.10, OS X requires kernel extensions to be signed. Sadly the officially available version of Soundflower isn’t signed because it’s an open source project and - as far as we know - no one has volunteered to do the work and pay the $99 fee to obtain a signing certificate.

That’s why we have built a signed version of Soundflower which will work on OS X 10.10, 10.11 and the new macOS 10.12 Sierra.

Download the zip and run the contained installer. Even though not required you probably should restart your Mac to make sure everything got installed properly.
